Day 168 - Four Hands in the Air

I'm not going to tell the story of this picture - you have to guess!

I will tell you that it has in it Dr. Holly Barton, Dr. Spencer Nice, Dr. Bruce Bowman and myself.

And I will tell you it's the back parking lot of Commonwealth Veterinary Clinic.

But that is all I'm going to tell you.  ;)  For now.

Day 167 - Roller Skating Fun

Several years ago, our church had an outing where we rented out the local skating rink.  SO fun.  Before the night ended, there were several competitions. One of them was this one. I can't remember what it's called but it goes like this:

You line up 4-5 people at a 'starting line' and tell them 'go!' and they skate around once.  When you approach the starting line again, you take off one skate and push yourself around on that one skate.  When you approach the starting line the third time, you take off the remaining skate and run.

It's VERY hard to run after having roller skates on for 2+ hours.

This picture is of our former youth pastor, Rick.  I can't remember if he won or not.

I do remember competing against 2 girls who worked with me that I invited to come skating - and them beating me.

Getting old is rough...... but roller skates really are fun.  :)

Day 166 - Wild Azalea

While visiting Mount Rogers last weekend for our camping adventure, we saw these.  I did not know what they were, but my friend, Paul told me they were wild Azaleas!  Cool!  They are tall - like a tree.  I had no idea.

He also said that you can not buy Azalea bushes to plant in your yard that are this lovely orange.  I'm not going to google it - I will just believe it because Paul said it.  :)

Day 165 - My Niece Taking a Picture

So, that's my niece taking a picture of my brother taking a picture of me.

This was in D.C. this past April.  :)

Day 164 - A Bird in the Zoo

This is a bird at the national zoo in D.C.  I was there on a date with my now hubby, then boyfriend in 2005.

This bird, the Cassowary, has a large weapon on it's head.

I think that is very cool.

Day 163 - Rock Climbing Matt

So, I missed blogging Tuesday due to our internet being non-functional and I missed blogging yesterday because our Croatian vet student, Tatjana arrived and I thought it was rude to just run off to the computer and leave her alone.

So, tonight you get the scruffy face of my hubby before ascending this rock wall with great skill and aptitude.

This was the same place where we saw the giant copperhead.  *Shudder*

It was such a fun outing.  I had been sick for 6-8 weeks prior with what was likely my first bout with Bartonella (swollen lymph nodes and all.)  I was undiagnosed at the time and I did recover with time.  But I remember being pretty weak when trying to climb this wall - but I did it!  Twice!  (It really wasn't that difficult.....)

But it was super fun.  And I loved seeing Matt be this strong, capable, outdoorsy leader.  Pretty sure I kissed him a lot this day.  :)

It's that time of year again..... Spring.  :)

Day 159 - The Ant and the Peony

Ok, I'm sitting here a little disappointed about this post.  I was all excited to tell the world about the cool relationship between ants and peony flowers - that the flower buds require the work of ants to actually open and bloom.

But I just researched it (never wanting to be one to spread false information) and it is NOT true.

I'm sad.

But, regardless, I have a cool picture of an ant on a just opening peony bud that is pretty cool.  Click to make it larger.  :)

Camping was wonderful.

Day 157 - Camping

No post tomorrow - I'll be in the woods.

And unlike the picture above where I slept ON THE GROUND ALL NIGHT, this time I'll have a tent.  :)  Yay for tents.  And yay for camping with good friends.  I'm so excited I could burst.

The picture above was taken from my last backpacking trip with Glenda and Paul and we slept on the ground at Tinker Cliffs.  Neema layed next to me all night and neither she nor I slept.  When I got up in the morning for breakfast, she crawled into my sleeping bag and passed out.  Lucky dog.

I slept really well that night in my own bed.  :)

Day 156 - Lily

Several years ago, my grandmother gave me several plants to put in my yard.  This lily and several hastas.  Surprisingly, they have all lived. (Almost everything else I've ever planted has died.)

The singular lily has turned into multiple lilies that this year made these adorable little flowers.  SOOOO cute!

Thanks, Grand-mama!  :)

Day 155 - Rocks

I've had a pretty stressful week - and today was a very long day.  It's 10pm and I got home about 20 minutes ago.  It's my dad's birthday and I did not get to call him.  I have not eaten supper yet.

So, I'm posting a picture of rocks.  Because there is not much of a story there and I can now eat some Cheerios and go to bed.  Night.

Day 154 - Bucket List # 8

:)  Yes, riding a mechanical bull was on my bucket list.  And it was fun!  And I was sober - and bare-footed!

Rick Miller actually talked me into this.  This was at the Rockingham County Fair circa 2003, I think.

I did not last very long.  But I gave it my best shot!

Day 153 - The Lovely Libby-Loo

This is the lovely Libby - she is a dear, sweet, smart, funny gal who I've known for 3 years now.  I met her through my church and she is a part of our small group that gets together on Sunday nights.

She is a library archivist who recently got her concealed weapon permit.  She is so cool.  :)

Day 152 - Working on a Cougar

A couple of weeks ago, I got to speak to the entire 5th grade at a local elementary school for 'career day.'  They came in 25 or so at a time in 4 different groups over 3.5 hours.  I have done some sort of career day almost every year I've been here in VA - but usually I'm talking to kindergarten or 1st graders.  Or pre-schoolers.

5th grade was very different and very fun.  They actually asked really good questions!  (As opposed to first graders who raise their hands and say they have a question and then it goes something like "my dog is black and likes to eat mushrooms and this one time he got his head stuck in a bag and then my cat jumped on him and then..... and then..... and then....."  :)

I still like 1st graders - but I think I like talking to 5th graders more.  And just this past week I did what I think is my first ever speaking/teaching time with some high schoolers.  They were especially fun.  :)

I digress.

I always gave the 5th graders the opportunity to ask me questions.  Without fail each group asked the same two: 1) what is the most dangerous animal I have ever worked on and 2) what is the hardest part of my job.

To digress a little farther, my favorite questions of the day were: 1)" If a lizard breaks it's leg, do you put a small cast on it?" and 2) "so, when people die, that's just it - they are dead. But when a cow dies or a goat dies - we can eat it. So why don't you get paid more than a real doctor since you can actually make money off your patients when they die. We don't eat people so they are no good once they are dead."

Bahaa haaaa haaaa!  KIDS!  How great is that question?  I had to really concentrate to not bust out laughing (which I did not.)

I usually blasted their socks off when I told them the most dangerous animal I had ever worked on was a shark.  Heh.  :)

That's a small fib, though.  I was not actually IN the water with the shark - just standing next to it.  But the point was to let them know that there is a vet out there who works on ALL kinds of animals and fish and lizards and birds and bears and such.

In fact, one of the 5th grader's answer to my question "what does a veterinarian do?" was brilliant.  He said that a veterinarian takes care of any kind of problem with any kind of animal.  :)  Smart kid.

In all actuality, the most dangerous animal I've ever gotten to put my hands on is the picture you see above.  That's a cougar.

Cats send more veterinarians/veterinary staff to the hospital than any other animal.  And that cougar up there is one big cat.  :)

This was during my ROCKING Wildlife/Exotics rotation my senior year of vet school.  There was a brief period of time in my life when I was younger that I wanted to be a zoo vet.  I realized later the improbability of such a scenario, but those 2 weeks of school were simply awesome.

One of the things I got to do was go to a local big cat sanctuary and help with a root canal on this cougar.  Dr. Jones is the guy in the picture and he is one cool dude.  (He's also a big dude!  Look how small I am next to him!  And look at the size of the tail of that cat! Wow! ) He used a blow dart to sedate the cougar and once she was out, I intubated her to keep her on gas anesthesia during the procedure.

Talk about being nervous!  I had to stick my hands inside the mouth of this cougar and hope she did not wake up and eat me.  :)

She didn't.

And the entire day was fabulous.

The bottom picture is of me actually placing the tube in her mouth.  It was awkward doing it with her laying on her side, but I got it done.

Can any of my vet school peeps tell me the name of the female doctor in the pic?  She was our exotics Resident and she always said 'Aw PUMPKIN!  Who did it?  Who do it?' to her patients when they were squawking at her.  I loved her.  But I can't remember her name....

She was also very kind to me when I completely blew it and gave a screech owl a 25% dextrose solution SQ instead of a 2.5% solution.  Ooops.  Owl did fine, btw.  No sloughing!  :)

Yay, vet school memories.

Day 151 - Abby the Foal

This is little Abby.  She will be 2 weeks old on Monday and is one of a set of twins.  Horses don't usually have twins and when they do, the babies usually don't survive.  Abby's twin did not make it, but she did! That makes her extremely special.

She has contracted tendons and is having trouble walking.  For the past 2 days I have given her IV medication to help her tendons relax and fashioned splints from PVC pipes to help her be able to stand to nurse.

She's an absolute gem.  She just lays there and lets me work on her and then when we stand her up, she takes off towards mom to get a drink.  She is much improved today - so I'm hopeful she be out of her splints soon.  She has a sore on her right front leg that I wish was exposed to air and not under a rubbing bandage.

She is so sweet.  And so small!  Oh, and so cute, too.  :)

Day 149 and 150 - Neema in the Morning

Blogger was down for repairs yesterday so I couldn't post.  Boo.

Today is day 150!  Crazy!

This is my sweet, sweet doggie on our bed - waking me up in the morning.  When I'm allowed to sleep in and Matt gets up before me, Neema comes and takes his place.  She's hilarious in the mornings.  She'll curl up next to me and sleep (so sweet!) until I'm really awake and then she throws herself on me, flipping onto her back so I can rub her tummy.  It's the ONLY time she wants me to rub her tummy.  She starts 'talking' and will jump on and off the bed repeatedly, beckoning me to get up.

I love her.  :)

Day 148 - My Bestest and her Mom

Since I'm on a wedding kick, thought I'd post one from my best friend, Candi's wedding.  Her wedding was beautiful and awesome.  :)  I was so happy to be a part of it.

This is her and her mom sharing a giggle before the ceremony.  How cute are they???

Day 147 - My Wedding Dress

So, with posting wedding pictures from Dr. Barton's wedding and looking forward to Matt and I's 3 year anniversary in a couple of weeks, I decided to post a picture from my pre-wedding era.

This picture was taken at my parent's house in TN.  This was me trying on my dress for the first time after it's final alteration and pressing.  That's my bestest bud, Candi tying me in.  She needed to practice putting it on me and doing up my bustle.  This was in April of 2008 and was the weekend that my home church had a lovely shower for me.

After I changed back into my regular clothes, my granddaddy and I practiced our dancing.  :)

Day 146 - Another Wedding Picture

Ok, another shot from Dr. Barton's wedding on Saturday.  They had cool champagne glasses and someone left their hat on this awesome table in front of some cool chairs.  A photo-op ensued.  :)

Day 144 - Purple Flowers

Borrowed my friend, Erin's camera and lens today (though this shot was taken with my 85mm lens) to take some maternity portraits in the morning and shoot some photos at Dr. Barton's wedding.

It was held in gorgeous Nelson County, VA and we had gorgeous spring weather.  The location was Pharsalia - and it was lovely.

I have no idea what these completely perfect round purple flowers are, but I want some.  :)

Day 143 - Lily

sigh.  I don't think my camera is fixed.

The letter I got with my 'repaired' camera stated that the autofocus assembly was incorrect but they fixed it. I'm not so sure.

I took some more test shots today - on a tripod.  Single focus point, focus confirmation, and I used my remote to fire the shot.  It was great light and there is no reason that the pic shouldn't be perfectly tack-sharp.

Well, it is not.

I'm taking some portraits tomorrow and attending a wedding where I'll be taking pictures.  I am so frustrated that my camera is not focusing properly that I'm going to borrow a friend of mine's Canon to use instead.

Once I have hers in hand, I'm going to set up the ultimate test to really find out if my camera is not right or if my expectations are too high.  I'll set up a shot on a tripod, use the same lens, and take the same shot with both cameras and compare them.  If my new camera is taking blurry pictures - I'm going to send Canon the shots and request a new camera.

I'm so sad.  It's so disappointing to research and plan and expect to be taking a step forward with my photography only to take a step back.

But, Canon is a good company and I hope they will do what is needed to keep me as a customer.

BTW - this is NOT the tripod shot.  This one is hand-held and is not TOO bad.  The tripod shots were actually very blurry.  Grrrrr.

Day 142 - Peonies

I sent my new camera off for repair as I was having rather frustrating difficulties with it's autofocus feature.

Got it back today.  I think it's doing better.  :)

These are my peonies getting ready for their grand bloom.

Day 141 - Zip Line in Hawaii

It's turning out to be a long week - so I'm taking the short and sweet route when blogging.

This one is a caption contest.  Hee.

From our honeymoon in Hawaii - we took the day to do a zipline course, which was awesome.

I always laugh when I look at this one.  We look utterly...ridiculous.  I'm so glad I had them take our picture.  :)

This was taken in Charleston, SC when Matt and I were visiting his dad a few years ago.

Lovely purple flower boxes.  I like purple.  :)
